Learn About Mycoplasma Genitalium
Mycoplasma Genitalium Symptoms
Mycoplasma is a bacteria that can cause infection in different parts of the body. The type of Mycoplasma that is sexually transmitted and creates an STI is called Mycoplasma genitalium, known as MG or Mgen for short.
MG can infect the vagina, the penis, or the rectum. Most people with MG don’t have any symptoms. Those who do may experience:
- Genital discharge
- Genital itching
- The sensation of burning with urination
- An unusual fishy odour of the genitals, especially after sex
- Vaginal bleeding after sex or in between periods
- Pain with sex, especially in the lower belly (for women)
These symptoms can be easily confused for the symptoms of other STIs, or may be mistaken as passing irritation unrelated to an STI, which is why routine testing is so important.
Mycoplasma Genitalium Complications
Most people with MG will have no symptoms and their body will clear the infection without treatment. However, for some people the infection will stay in their system and continue to cause problems.
Left untreated, MG can cause health issues that include:
- Urethritis (inflammation and irritation of the urethra)
- Cervicitis (inflammation and irritation of the cervix)
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease can cause serious and potentially permanent health problems for women, including ectopic pregnancy, scarring, and infertility. For people who are pregnant, MG may be associated with preterm birth or pregnancy loss.
Fortunately, with the right treatment, MG can be cured.
