Learn About Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C Symptoms
Hepatitis C is a contagious viral infection that affects the liver and is transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. This can happen from contact with needles, razors, or toothbrushes, or from sexual contact. It can also be passed from a pregnant mother to the unborn baby.
Some people with hepatitis C have no symptoms at all. Others experience vague symptoms that they may not think are related to an STI, which is why routine testing is so important.
Early symptoms of hepatitis C include:
- Feeling tired and achy
- Fever
- Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting
- Jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes or the skin)
- Dark or clay-like stools
If a person does develop symptoms, they usually develop them within 2-12 weeks of infection. Even if they are asymptomatic, however, they can still transmit the hepatitis C virus to someone else.
Hepatitis C Complications
Some people with hepatitis C will be able to clear it spontaneously within six months. However, most people will develop a chronic infection that can be lifelong and may cause substantial – sometimes fatal – liver damage if it goes untreated.
Even if a person is asymptomatic, untreated hepatitis C causes progressive liver damage that impairs its ability to function correctly. Possible complications of this infection include:
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Liver failure
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
Fortunately, hepatitis C can be cured; treatment is effective in over 90% of people. It’s advisable to be treated as soon as possible to reduce the chance of liver damage occurring.
